Joint Locks
Hapkido’s most
versatile techniques are possibly the joint
locks. One can prevent an imminent attack
by approaching the opponent and holding him
with a joint lock (whereas it is often possible
to deflect a kick and then throw the opponent
or to free the arm that is being held and
then restrain the opponent subsequently).
With a joint lock applied to the attacker’s
wrist one can afflict controlled pain, thereby
completely subduing the opponent. Depending
on the opponent’s age, size or aggressiveness
one can adapt the level of pain without permanent
physical harm.
The above mentioned
techniques are to be understood within the
context of the respective self-defence situation
(which always stands in relation to the severeness
of the attack).
